In May 2009, the symposium Reading Writing Dancing was held at York University in collaboration with The Dance Current magazine and the Society for Canadian Dance Studies. In a roundtable meeting, we discussed the future of critical discourse about dance in Canada. One recommendation involved launching in-person meetings and discussion groups at various scales. Thinking Out Loud: The Study Group is one such initiative. We meet monthly in Toronto (see our schedule below) and we're extending our conversation virtually through this blog.
You can read a synthesis of the RWD roundtable meeting in the first few entries of this blog.

It's an experiment.
We meet monthly (we being a small and fluctuating group of interested artists and arts professionals from across disciplines, practices and generations) to discuss an article or two that we circulate in advance of the meeting. Jacob Zimmer (Dancemakers) and Megan Andrews (The Dance Current) facilitate the discussion, with the help of Dancemakers' interns Kari Pederson and Leora Morris. Participants shape the discussion and suggest readings. Following the meetings, we'll post some reflections here and anyone is welcome to comment.
Join the discussion here. Or start a local group and follow along with our readings. Contact jacob@dancemakers.org for more details.
